  • Risk Management – Safety and Design Considered

    The procedures and processes in your business must be efficient, and you should have methods of operation which take into consideration risk management. When you are designing these processes safety is something which may not necessarily be a major consideration for you, but it definitely should be. There are all sorts of OSHA standards, and I don’t recommend that you break any – however, sometimes OSHA standards in certain circumstances can create unsafe situations.

    The reality is that you need to keep your business model and processes within the boundaries of OSHA law to prevent lawsuits, and regulatory fines. Nevertheless, let me explain to you one case study and example, something in my own company prior to retirement which always bothered me.   • Effective delegating skills can be the secret to leadership success

    In what could come as music to many a manager’s ears, the key to managing effectively is in not actually doing your work, but instead allocating it effectively amongst your employees. Okay, so in actuality this may be only partly true. Obviously as a manager there’s a vast range of determinants that influence the status of success you could reach. Still, a major string any manager should have to their bow is the power to effectively man-manage. An essential segment of man-management is delegation.

    By bestowing delegation as a critical management skill, leaders can considerably decrease their workload and focus their attention either on assisting workers to be able to do the tasks or to work on more important and pressing ventures. Alternatively, there is a risk that that if a leader is too buried by their own workload, they will not be capable to delegate effectively and therefore enter an ostensibly everlasting downward spiral of work and stress, which will simply grow worse over time. Efficient delegation can fix this.

    Delegation can also be delegated, by warranting a subordinate to make choices on the leader’s behalf, effectively shifting the choice-making control from one organizational level to one that is below. (more…)


  • Innovation For Business – Innovating Your Internal Business Procedures

    When developing an innovation strategy, it is important to discuss ways to innovate internal business procedures. Spend time brainstorming on the various steps in your internal business procedures and look for ways to simplify or eliminate steps to streamline those procedures.

    However, before getting to the issue of innovating a business procedure, there’s a critical preliminary question: Is the procedure necessary?

    I recently worked with a company that performs repair services on electronic appliances. The company had a detailed “inventory procedure” that was completed every morning before the store opened. The procedure required an employee to print a report of all “open” repair orders from the computer. Then, the employee handling the inventory procedure that morning checked to be sure that every appliance in for repair was actually in the store.
